Kingdom / Chapter 689

This chapter made me remember a random thing that happened in school.

I took a class where the professor's hot daughter was one of the students.  Maybe because he wanted to scare off horny boys, he started randomly musing about his time in the army one day.

He told us the thing we had to understand about war that no one tells you is, killing is a rush.  He went into some detail.

It was deeply disturbing.

Shin to Bihei:

"Hold my purse"

First pointing out that there's really no reason for Rei to be holding tea here...

EXCEPT, for the steam to show which way the wind is blowing-

Second, now that Zhao is making big moves, even though it looks like Kanki's already lost, now he has room to do Kanki stuff.

Notice, he's disappeared from the battlefield... if your his opponent, that's a terrible sign.  He's on the move.

Here's the map:

His camp location allows him the cover of forest.  He can, under cover of forest, head a strike force and move to his left, cross the river, maybe next to the cliffs Shin's fighting on, and be in position to strike the base camp.

If Shin wraps up the battle on the left in time, they can strike at base together, while Zhao is busy mopping up the rest of Kanki's forces.

I'm not sure he's trying that, but I bet he's trying something.  I don't think Kanki just ran.

well, Bao-face sure is strong, even for a nipple armor guy.  It should be an odd duel, neither weapon (glaive vs round Warhammer) can cancel out the others' strength- shin with speed and dexterity, bao-face with might.

but then, Rei Warned us that bao-guy is using 'strange martial technique' so perhaps there's more to him than there appears.

Also, in case anyone missed it, the clinking bags the hooded guys held in the last panel, those are tools of torture.  Raido's gonna have an awful day.

Kanki.  Even if he wins using this strategy, he's now cost Qin Ouhon's unit, and himself lost Raido unit, which I think was his heaviest hitter.

I know that he had to win quickly against terrible odds.  But, compare him to Ousen in the last war... he may win, but, at what cost?

Ousen lost folk too.  But, not like this.

I don't think Kanki is best operating on his own, in big, entrenched battles.  His strategies work, but, I see his weakness now.  If he is forced to fight straight up, no tricks... he's not very good.  In fact, he can't quite do it.  Here, he is still relying on his old tricks of trying to bait his enemy using brutality... I guess it worked.  But, he couldn't pay this high a cost many times.  I honestly think his army is way weaker without Raido, who was his strongest 'pure military' commander/force.  And the guy kanki himself said was the only one he could count on for this.

In other news, I look forward to seeing how Anakin showed up from the right, and, why they didn't just go that direction to start... I guess maybe the cliff guys opened a gap?

Ok so, real talk, 682 on my first read was my least favorite kingdom chapter ever.  I had notes.

but rereading it, I feel better for a few reasons.  Which I'll share.

1.  the first part of the cliff they started climbing: first read, I thought it was vertical.  Its not, quite, if you look, its too steep to walk up, too steep for horses, but not quite vertical.  Unless they are/were pushing upwards, their feet could've taken the majority of their weight, which matters.

2.  The second part of the cliff, the inverted part, wasn't inverted the whole way.  There were inverted sections, which, yes, would've been a nightmare to climb.  but other spots on which they could have rested temporarily.

3. Once they were away from the falling rocks, they could have rested a bit, even on the inverted section.  kinda.

4.  Only the people in the lead, the best climbers, made it up the inverted cliff.  The rest went back to the sloped cliff, and climbed that.  And, the best climbers only climbed the inverted cliff for a small section of it.  Because Zhao waited until they were nearly at the top to start with the rocks.

5.  The arrows.  That was my least favorite part- they were shot with arrows on the cliffs, but could grab their shields?  Well... on one hand, I don't remember shields being in previous panels. so I can't defend that.  But on the other, that section of cliff, the slope was such that in theory they could have released their hands to grab shields without falling.

OK.  Keeping my crown as kingdom's #1 apologist.  This chapter sure made it tough though and I really hope its not a sign of things to come.

Kingdom / Chapter 681

I didn't love this chapter at first.  It seemed a bit easy.

But then I got to thinking...

At first, it was just Shin on a horse, kyoukai the assassin, and a bunch of tough-ass peasants, doing things no other unit would think to do, always taking the hardest route because they had to. So, this is less of a cop out than, them going back to basics...

And, since Shin is at this point the hero of all the peasants in Qin who want to join the army, and, most of the population was peasantry, it makes sense that they would have gotten really strong candidates.  And that the infantry would be stronger than any opponents would figure possible.

Especially because, if you think about it, most armies are built around 'elites,' which tend to be cavalry.  The infantry is seen like 'pawns,' pieces to send out early, to sacrifice, lines that hold or fold, but not the strong ones, not the ones who win battles.

Sometimes I think I'm thinking myself into liking kingdom as much as I do, lol.  But, I do love it, and, in the end, I feel like the point of this battle is to remind us that the secret strength of Hi Shin is that it retains the character of Shin and the original members.  Guys who worked their way up from nothing, not because they were the best trained or the best armed, but, because they had iron wills and strong backs.

Hara-sama (through some minor character):

"I don't know how that bandit thinks, but you were wrong in your prediction.  Kanki's plan wasn't to back off and take the glory for himself."

"This is why I can't quit you.  Never leave us"

Edit: I should probably digest first, but now I think Kanki's plan was: to both fuck with Shin and use Shin to win.  Make Shin sit and watch Ouhon die, knowing, he'd charge in angry and slightly recklessly as soon as given the "ok."

Kanki's real plan would start from there...  And really I'm just piggybacking on Mouten.  But, I think once Shin upends the field again, Kanki starts moving.

Unless Hi Shin smashes.  (Fingers crossed)

I feel better about having no idea WTF Kanki is thinking.   Not even Ousen gets it, and he's a fictional genius

I cannot think of one advantage Kanki has- ground, troop strength, numbers, position, entrenchment, surprise, strategy.

If he wins, it'll be like he defeated warfare itself

Edit: one thing comes to mind

a) Zhao engages kanki
b) Kanki takes light losses, immediately flame hares the hell outta there/retreats
c) Zhao assumes he's routed, begins flanking Ousen
d) Kanki returns, hits a pre-designated target, while Ousen's forces are getting routed
e) Ei Sei and Shoubunkun finally realize they made a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible decision
