Hey Jorgie-That's my take, yes... which is a bit extreme... I'm thinking maybe it doesn't slice his arm so much as dig into it?  That sword is a single edged blade, I always thought, so that'd be a hell of a knee.

But then again, Bao-man's kicks and such are cracking Shin's armor, so, I guess it kinda fits.

Regarding why he can't bring the sword down... well, given his kicks break armor (which is fanciful), maybe I'm splitting hairs, but, that'd be a pretty hard thing to do, bio-physically.  In the end, martial arts are about the physics of a human body, creating and expending force, managing torque, etc.

To knee shin, Mr Dumpling went up on one foot, and pivoted, creating energy and channeling it into his knee.  Shin has used that against him- his knee's energy expended itself on Shin's sword.

But, although its not pictured, the standard way to do that would be- to properly channel all his force into his knee, Bao-man would have had to move his sword arm from where it is... he would have extended it out away from his body.  He would basically have swung his sword away from Shin, in the opposite direction/trajectory his knee travelled.

So, he could now swing his sword, and Shin is definitely exposed... but, Bao-guy just got his knee split, and his body's first reaction would be 'injury/stance recovery.'  He's a martial arts master so I guess we could say, its not out of the realm of possibility a manga martial master could immediately transition from terrible injury to attack that way, but, even so, it'd be pretty hard to do.  He's on one leg, he's at zero potential energy (after expending all his force on a failed knee attack), so, the only way he could generate the force for the blow would be to pull his cut knee OFF of shin's sword and swing his leg backwards while swinging his sword forward.  (swords are heavy, they require using one's limbs as counterweights to swing one-footed).

But then he'd be counting on being able to land on his injured leg without buckling.  he wouldn't know yet how badly injured he is, so that'd be risky as hell... especially because once he disengaged his knee from the blade, shin would be able to block again.

We'll see if he tries it.

This chapter made me remember a random thing that happened in school.

I took a class where the professor's hot daughter was one of the students.  Maybe because he wanted to scare off horny boys, he started randomly musing about his time in the army one day.

He told us the thing we had to understand about war that no one tells you is, killing is a rush.  He went into some detail.

It was deeply disturbing.

Well that's what I get for trying to google in languages I don't speak.

Anyway, I appreciate the education.

Ps.  All I've earned myself is desperately waiting for TWO manga to update.  Damnit! lol

That was ‘cause when i googled it I saw that the english title
Of “Ao No Kiseki” was “legend of the heroes.”  Sooo... ya, googling error.

I have a question for anyone who speaks Japanese?  (Translators who want in, this may be a chance for extra credit?)

The name of this Manga contains "Ao no," which I've seen around.  Per google, who's not very reliable I'm guessing, the literal translation would be "Blue of Orchestra."  But, would the translation be more like" Legend of the Orchestra?"   I guess I'm asking, what specifically does "Ao no" mean?

...and yes, yes I did just start reading this out of sadness and desperation on a break week.  But I'm enjoying it.

Oh, can we know?  The Shiji records tend not to go into that much detail... and the only one who's predictions so far are never wrong is KyouKai.

She's a bit less optimistic

Agreed... I don't know if Qin can un-grant someone the title of 'great general,' but, they're gonna want to.  Even if Kanki wins, this was terrible for Qin.

Gyouko Hyou's functionally ruined, Qin's losses under Kanki are probably 10-15,000 at least, just on his field, in a war where they're focus has been managing resources, because, they have to.

Even if Kanki somehow manages to take a general's head, even if he takes the HQ, with his Army basically leaving the field... I wonder how Qin's position on this field is much improved by his future 'victory.'  for them to really have won, Qin would have to be able to reform and secure that ground faster than Zhao, who has more troops in better morale and better formation (although spread to chase down bandits)

Raido was loyal to the end.  But knowing how this battle went, will his other commanders really want to keep fighting in the next hard fight?  Or will they want to run, knowing that Kanki really is ok with hanging them out to dry?

Even if he wins, he still kinda lost.  And probably badly.  At this point I am wondering whether Kanki is even in the army after this.

I'd like to take a second for Hara appreciation regarding this duel.

I remember saying/thinking that steamed bun guy's round Warhammer was too big to be swung with speed, and, shin had the weapon-speed advantage.

This is still true- instead of swinging his weapon with speed equivalent to shin's glaive, steamed bun (aka bao) guy is using his martial arts to quickly move his whole body... that way he doesn't have to move the round hammer much.  In other words, he's using his agility (martial arts) to counter his weapon's lack of dexterity.  nullifying shin's advantage, and, giving his weapon's might the edge in the duel.

...I have no idea how shin plans to have bihei help with this.  Maybe Shin's planning to pick him up and throw him at bao-dude's feet

First pointing out that there's really no reason for Rei to be holding tea here...

EXCEPT, for the steam to show which way the wind is blowing-

Second, now that Zhao is making big moves, even though it looks like Kanki's already lost, now he has room to do Kanki stuff.

Notice, he's disappeared from the battlefield... if your his opponent, that's a terrible sign.  He's on the move.

Here's the map:

His camp location allows him the cover of forest.  He can, under cover of forest, head a strike force and move to his left, cross the river, maybe next to the cliffs Shin's fighting on, and be in position to strike the base camp.

If Shin wraps up the battle on the left in time, they can strike at base together, while Zhao is busy mopping up the rest of Kanki's forces.

I'm not sure he's trying that, but I bet he's trying something.  I don't think Kanki just ran.

I can't wait for the next chapter!  Break weeks are so hard! lol

Ya, as I'm sure you know Jac, the backstory is only hinted at.  I guess that Moubu was sent to subdue Kanki, and offered him a generalship rather than kill him, because he's so skilled... and Kanki was then sent to hunt other bandits, and he gave them the same choice.  But ya, that would make a great spin-off.

This battle's making me think that Kanki is something like Kesha was.  I love both their styles (although I don't love Kanki's brutality.). Reading the opponent and, making moves that the opponent never sees.  Kesha's moves were defensive- traps.  Kanki's are usually pretty offensive.

Only now, maybe he's struggling because, from his opponent, there's so little to read.  The opponent is not making big bold moves.  They don't need to, they have terrain and army size advantages.

Its like, Kanki can't get a foothold to do his Kanki thing, so, he's just been throwing soldiers at the situation, watching them die, looking for a foothold.

He'll probably find one... ?   But, the other truly skilled generals will probably see his weak spot now.

Next you'll tell us this whole thing ends with the unification of china or something

Thanks for the chapter!!
