To You, The Immortal

Everyone lined up timing wise this week, hopefully our releases will continue like this or be even faster once a new Typesetter joins the fray.
Also if anyone with typesetting experience would like to help finish 'One Week Friends', we have 7 chapters (many of them are short) where the only thing left to do is Typeset.
No one has time to finish it off and it'd be nice to have the fans get some closure. Thank you for your consideration!
Enjoy the chapter~

We are looking for redrawers on many of our projects (Sinbad!) so please apply~

Guides and Training / Magazine Cleaning Guide
« on: December 30, 2014, 07:37:10 am »
Welcome, so it seems you have an interest in learning how to clean Magazine scans. This guide is going to look like crap format wise, but ideally you'll be able to get a better understanding for some things written in this guide.

Here are the photoshop filters mandatory for Magazine Cleaning (Links are for PC only, sorry):
TL Denoise 3: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39297206/Topaz/Topaz%20Denoise%203.01.rar

We will be covering the following topics in more detail:
- Denoise Filters
- Detail Recovery
- Topaz Clean 3 Filter settings
- General Sharpening
- Dirt Removal Techniques

Magi General Process:
Straighten/Crop (Warp page if necessary)
Duplicate Layer (When photoshopping, all edits should be made on a copied layer, keeping the original is useful in lots of ways)
Sharpen
Denoise 3
Denoise 5
Dirt Removal (If applicable)
Detail Recovery (If applicable)
Resize 8000px height
Levels  (Adjustments > Levels or Ctrl+L. Do not use an adjustment layer)
Burn/Dodge
Resize 3000px height
Denoise 5 (If applicable)
Resize 1200px height, 72ppi
Expand Canvas trick
Topaz Clean 3
Contract Canvas
Level to get rid of Topaz Clean Dust
Finish burning (Anything you missed at 8000px height will be extremely easy to burn now)

Guides and Training / Tankoubon/Volume Raw Cleaning test instructions

Sense Tankoubon Test: https://db.tt/q4LwbrFd

[Helpful Random Tips]

- Holding down shift accelerates your movement around the page, extremely useful when using the straightening tool and crop tool.
- [ and ] change brush size. You can also hold down the ALT key, right click then drag mouse left or right.
- Use the scroll wheel to move around the page vertically, hold down CTRL while using the scroll wheel to move horizontally. This is extremely useful when zoomed in.
- Hold down the ALT key and use the scroll wheel to zoom in or out on the area your mouse is over.
- Binding the Burn tool and Dodge tool to separate keys helps speed up work flow.
- Binding the ruler tool to a key will take out many unnecessary clicks.

[File types and Colour modes]

As a note: We will be saving all of our pages in the .PSD format (Photoshop's native file format), because it saves colour mode data, image resources, Layer and Mask Information, and image data.

Start off by taking a look the different file types contained in this raw-package.

We have:

.TIFF - (A container-file of sorts; the ability to store image data in a lossless format makes a TIFF file a useful image archive, because, unlike standard JPEG files, a TIFF file using lossless compression (or none) may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality)

.PNG - (file format that supports lossless data compression. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet.)

.JPG - (Joint Photographic Experts Group. (.JPG file extension, pronounced Jay Peg). This is the right format for those photo images which must be very small files, for example, for web sites or for email.

By now you must be asking Why we have raws in so many different file formats. The reason is more simple than it should be: the person scanning the book chose that file type. Scanners have presets that they prefer and as cleaners it's our job to be able to accommodate many different types of images.

There are a few things to note when you first open a page:

The first being the 'Image Mode', amongst these raws you will find: Indexed colour mode, RGB colour mode, and Grayscale mode (denoted as Index#, RGB/8#, Gray/8 respectively)

- Indexed color is a technique to manage digital images' colors in a limited fashion, in order to save computer memory and file storage, while speeding up display refresh and file transfers.
- RGB refers to a colour mode that makes use of the additive colour system (made up of red-green-blue).
- Grayscale, as the name infers is a mode where all colour data is discarded, you are left with blacks, whites and shades of gray.

It is extremely important that you do not attempt to work with an image in indexed colour mode, if you try to straighten the image it will come out extremely jagged and will look disgusting regardless of what you do to the image beyond that.

For cleaning volume scans (tankoubon) we will be working exclusively in grayscale, as additional colour information could leave blacks and whites tinted with another colour as a result of the scanner or original printing. Grayscale mode, since it discards colour information, has a much smaller filesize than RGB making it ideal for passing files amongst team members.

To change an image's colour mode:

Changing between image modes is an action performed extremely regularly. You'll see that I have changing to Grayscale and RGB modes bound to custom shortcuts, this makes workflow easier in my case.

[Sharpening]
(click to show/hide)
Adding on to what the above image said, when using the high pass filter try to keep the radius value low (I almost never have to go above 1.0).
Changing the high pass layer's mode can help with increasing contrast (helping our cause), I like to have it set on overlay for the most part.
